A Child and a Son
The preciseness of detail of the Old Testament Messianic prophecies is incredible. Inspired. Divinely inspired would be the best explanation for them. Isaiah 9:6 is a bright jewel among the precious stones of these prophecies.
Christ is both the child that was born and the Son that was given. At first glance these two lines might seem to be repetitive, a tautology of sorts. That is partly true, but it misses the distinction that is being made. As a child, Christ could be born. But as the Son of God, Christ could only be given.
What Isaiah does here give us a hint about the unique nature of Christ. He was both man (born so) and God (eternally so).
Come to Bethlehem’s cradle and be amazed.
