A Directed Heart
Scripture Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:5
Paul concludes his prayer for the saints by praying that “the Lord [would] direct [their] hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.” The Scriptures are clear about the problems of the human heart. It is deceitful and evil and none of us can fully know our own heart, its true motives, or its potential for doing wrong.
Thankfully, in Christ, by the grace of God, and the power of the Holy Spirit we need not despair about ourselves. Thus, Paul prayed for directed hearts. We are prone to wander. We can be led astray. We can also be directed by the Lord in a better way. The Psalmist proclaimed, “The Lord is my Shepherd…” He is ours as well. He can direct our hearts.
We are not left to our own devices and expected to figure it out using our wisdom and travel this road in our strength. We can live directed lives. Pray for that. Pray for a directed heart for yourself, your spouse, your children, your grandchildren, your church family…And trust that this is the kind of praying God will answer.
