A Faithful Priest
Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 1-2; Luke 19; Psalm 101
In the midst of judgment on Eli’s corrupt priestly line, God offers a stunning promise: “I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind.” This faithful priest would not only obey perfectly, but God Himself would build him “a sure house,” and he would “go in and out before [God’s] anointed forever.”
At first glance, this may seem like a promise fulfilled in Zadok, the priest who replaced Eli’s descendants during Solomon’s reign. But the language used—total obedience, a lasting house, and eternal service—goes far beyond any merely human priest.
In Jesus Christ, we see the final fulfillment of this promise. He is the faithful high priest who serves not just in an earthly tabernacle, but in the very presence of God. He alone does all that is in the Father’s heart and mind. His house is sure, not made with human hands, and His priesthood is eternal.
In a world of failed leaders and broken promises, this verse quietly whispers a powerful hope: God has raised up a priest who will never fail us, who represents us before the throne of grace forever. His name is Jesus.
Thank God for good and godly leaders. We need them everywhere. But don’t hang too much hope on them. Don’t expect more from a man than what a man can give you...Unless that man is Jesus. Eli let everyone down. The people needed more from a priest. God promised more. Jesus is always more.
Every time you are disappointed in someone and you think you need more out of people, just remind yourself that Jesus is more.
