A Firm Heart
Scripture Reading: Psalm 112:7
He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.
Another translation puts it this way: He does not fear bad news, nor live in dread of what may happen, for he has settled in his mind that Jehovah will take care of him.
When I was a boy, we would always watch Hee Haw on Saturday nights and they would always sing was “Doom, Despair, and Agony,” and one of the main lines was, “If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.” We could modify that a bit and say, “If it weren’t for bad news, there’d be no news at all.”
It is the way of life that we are going to be constantly bombarded with news of bad stuff. And I don’t mean just the official news like you would get on FOX, CNN, or ABC. I mean the stuff you hear from friends, family, neighbors, co-workers.
Bad news has the ability to create fear because when we hear it, it immediately raises questions about what may happen. The unknown or all of the bad things we imagine might happen that causes us to be afraid, anxious and worried.
So, the way it works is bad news, gives birth to fear, fear creates panic, panic leads to bad decisions.
As I said, we are constantly being bombarded with bad news and that can lead to this adhd way of life where we are never on a certain path, but always being tossed about, going here and there.
What helps us battle against that is trust in the Lord. The translation I read that says, “He has settle in his mind that Jehovah will take care of him,” is helpful. It gets at the heart of the matter. You have to make up your mind, you have to settle it for yourself, that you know that no matter what happens the Lord is going to take care of you.
