A Good Man
saved
Scripture Reading: 2 Chronicles 2-5; Acts 11; Psalm 4
When we read Acts chapter 10, we’re introduced to Cornelius — and it’s clear he was a good man.
Now, I know the Bible says, “There is none good but God.” But Scripture often speaks of goodness in two ways. In the absolute sense, no one measures up to God’s perfect standard. But in a relative, human sense, there are people whose lives are marked by integrity, generosity, and reverence for God — and that’s worth noticing.
Cornelius was one of those men. Verse two describes him as “a devout man who feared God… gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.” When his messengers came to Peter, they described him as “an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation.”
And yet, when Peter later explained the events to the believers in Jerusalem, he made it plain: Cornelius still needed to be saved. The angel had told Cornelius to send for Peter because, “He will declare to you a message by which you will be saved.”
Here’s the point: Cornelius was a good man who needed the gospel. His character was commendable. His reputation was honorable. But his salvation came only through hearing and believing the message of Jesus Christ.
The same is true for us. It doesn’t matter how moral, kind, or generous we are — without Christ, we fall short.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Even good people.
