A New Song
Scripture Reading: Judges 14-15; Psalm 96
Psalm 96:1–3 (ESV):
"Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!"
Psalm 96 bursts with joy. It doesn’t whisper praise—it shouts it. It invites not just one nation, not just one person, but the whole earth to sing. And not just any song—a new song.
Why a new song? Because God’s mercies are new every morning. Because His saving work is ongoing and ever surprising. Because the gospel—God rescuing sinners through His Son—is the kind of news that never gets old, but always deserves to be told in fresh, living ways.
In a world where all news is bad news, Psalm 96 calls us to be good-news people. It doesn't just say, “Feel grateful.” It says, “Sing!” Not just in church, but from the heart, every day. It tells us to declare—to speak, share, and announce what God has done. “Tell of his salvation from day to day.”
That “salvation” the psalmist spoke of has found its full meaning in Jesus Christ. He is the Savior whose coming fulfills every hope in this song. He is the King who is coming to judge the world in righteousness (v. 13), and His justice will set all things right.
So this psalm pushes us outward. It’s a missionary song. It tells us that worship is not private; it’s public. It’s global. The glory of God isn’t just for us to enjoy—it’s for the nations to hear. “Declare his glory among the nations.”
