A Prayer for Others Today
As you know, I like to post prayers here regularly. Since I recently wrote extensively about prayer, I thought this would be a good time to post this one by Augustus Toplady. One recent Friday, I made it my own prayer but modified it because Friday is the day I focus on praying for family members. So, instead of praying using “our” and “we,” as it is found in the original prayer, I used “they” and “them” and had in mind my wife, sons, DILs, grandchildren, siblings, mom, nieces and nephews, and in-laws. Here it is in its original form. I suggest reading it through at least once before praying it for yourself or others. You want to pray what you can say “Amen” to:
Lord, make our service acceptable to you while we live, and our souls ready for you when we die. As long as we are in the world, keep us from the evil of it, and from the snares and dangers to which we are continually exposed in our passage through it. O make our pilgrimage safe and sure through all the troubles, changes, and temptations of this mortal life, to the unchangeable glories and felicities of the life everlasting. Be merciful to us this day. Keep us in all our ways, bless all our lawful undertakings, and grant that we may take nothing in hand but what is warranted by your Word, and agreeable to your will concerning us. Set your fear before our eyes all the day long; and put your love into our hearts, that we may not depart from you. Bless and preserve us in our going out and coming in. May the angel of your presence save us from all sin and danger.
Amen.

One phrase reminds me of 1st Peter 5:8. Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour
