A Prayer for the Lord's Day
This is a prayer written by George Matheson that would be appropriate to pray today, this Lord’s Day. Every church needs unity and love to be the hallmarks and atmosphere of their gatherings. Matheson’s prayer points us in the right direction to achieve that. May we be able to make his prayer our own.
I find it helpful when praying a prayer someone else wrote, to read it through at least one time before actually praying it myself. I want to make sure I can give a heartfelt “Amen” to what is written, and I want to have the ideas and petitions contained in the prayer in my mind before I pray them as my own prayer.
So, you may want to read through this prayer today, and then go back and make it your own prayer by using Matheson’s words or possibly modifying them to fit your own thoughts…
Son of Man, give us a common interest in you: it is the only thing that will make us one. Help us through a common love to forget our individual desires. It is my individual desires that make me a dull companion. Often in the social hour, I sit silent, not because I am ignorant, but because I am uninterested. Crucify my spirit of isolation, my desire to be alone. Give me power to come out from myself into the community of men, into the common love.
Amen.
