Abundance
Scripture Reading: Psalm 65:9-13
The imagery of verse 11 in the English Standard Version translation is fantastic: your wagon tracks overflow with abundance! I can visualize that. The wagon is loaded with the harvest, the weight of it pushes down on the soil, and it leaves its mark, a depression deeply embedded in the fertile loam of Zion.
David was celebrating the harvest and God’s rich blessing upon His people. While he writes of a contemporaneous experience, he is also projecting a reality that remains to be seen. The redemption of God in Jesus Christ is spiritual, but it is physical as well. As Paul acknowledged in Romans chapter 8, the whole creation looks forward to its deliverance from corruption and bondage along with the children of God.
The book of Ruth beautifully pictures our salvation in the redemption of Ruth by Boaz. Boaz redeemed Ruth’s person, but the redemption was not complete until he also redeemed her property. Jesus saves our souls, but our salvation is not complete until he also resurrects our bodies. This world lives under a curse. We have been barred from Eden. We live east of that utopian land. But the day is coming when Christ completes the work and all of creation will rejoice with the sons and daughters of God, having been delivered from the tyranny of decay on the day when Jesus assumes His rightful throne, ruling over the affairs of men.
On that day, the wagons tracks will overflow with abundance.
That is something to look forward to.
