Aim for Restoration
Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:5-14
The Corinthian church had a lot of problems, including moral failures that were so spiritually damaging and deadly Paul had to rebuke them and call for serious and stern church discipline. What was Paul aiming at in his harsh dealings with these people? What did he want them to pursue in their handling of those who were grievously sinning?
In 13:9 Paul writes, “Your restoration is what we pray for.” In verse 11 he exhorts them to “aim for restoration.”
The goal, what we should pray for and aim at, in all discipline of sin is restoration. The goal is not, or at least should not be mere retribution and punishment. Getting a pound of flesh isn’t the point. Making someone pay isn’t the aim.
Discipline done right desires prays for and has as its goal the full restoration of the sinner to fellowship with God and God’s people.
