Scripture Reading: John 20:1-2, 11-18
Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”… (v.18)
Mary Magdalene is one of the most intriguing figures that are found in the gospel records. A certain degree of mystery surrounds her identity. Some traditions identify her as a former prostitute from the city of Magdalene. It could be that Magdalene, which means “a tower,” could have referred to her character not her home town and it is doubtful that she was a prostitute.
We do know that Jesus had delivered her from seven demons, she supported the ministry of Jesus financially, she was an eyewitness of the crucifixion and she was the first witness to the resurrection of Christ.
Some have given her the title “apostle.” While she was not an apostle in the official sense of the word, she certainly was an apostle in the broader sense the word implies. She was sent by Jesus to the disciples with the message of resurrection hope. This is why some call her the “apostle to the apostles.”
Everyone who has come to know the resurrected Jesus has the joy of an apostolic mission. The privilege of saying “He Lives!” is yours! This Lord’s Day, this resurrection day, proclaim it.
