Be God's Delight
Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 22-23; Psalm147
His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love. – Psalm 147:10-11
Anatoly is a social media prankster with a twist. He dresses up as a janitor—or sometimes as an old man—and walks into gyms where serious lifters are moving serious weight. He approaches bodybuilders with a thick Eastern European accent and asks, “May I try?”
They usually chuckle or look worried for him. But after a little banter, they agree. Then, to their astonishment, Anatoly lifts the massive weight—effortlessly—and knocks out reps that leave the others shaking their heads. Under the costume is a man of incredible strength.
Anatoly’s videos are entertaining, and his strength is real. People admire that kind of power. But Psalm 147 reminds us that while we’re impressed by physical might, God is not. His delight isn’t in raw strength or outward appearances. What pleases Him is something far deeper and more enduring: a heart that fears Him and hopes in His steadfast love.
There’s nothing wrong with being strong or striving for health. Paul even said, “Physical training is of some value.” But he immediately added, “Godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8).
In a world that celebrates physical performance and outward success, it’s good to remember where God sets His gaze. Not on muscle or reputation—but on the quiet, steady heart that trusts Him.
Lord, teach me to value what You value. Help me grow in godly fear and in hope rooted in Your steadfast love. Let my strength be found in trusting You.
