Be Still
Scripture Reading: Psalm 46:10
Be still and know that I am God…
This exhortation is not intended to call us to a complete resignation of all action and work as if we are to fall silent and inactive. Nor is it meant to say that we are to be unconcerned at all with the state of affairs of the world in which we find ourselves. God is not calling us to become hermits. He is not telling us to become stoics. This stillness is a stillness of the heart.
Do not fear. Do not fret. Do not be impatient and full of anxiety. Rest in God. Trust in His purposes and plans. Resign yourself to His will in the full knowledge that He is working all things for His glory and your good.
Like the sea, which may on the surface foam and roar but down in the depths is calm and serene, let your faith in God calm you in the depths of your heart. Be still. Be quiet. Be calm. Be restful. Because you know He is God.
Knowing God is both the root and the fruit of a still soul. We calm our spirit by faith that He is God, and out of that faith we see again, we know anew, that He is God.
