Because it is Right
Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
To children, Paul gives the simplest and most straightforward reason that they ought to obey their parents – because it is right. While this verse is aimed at children who are under the authority of their parents, the principle could be applied more broadly.
At the risk of oversimplifying things, most of life is about doing the right thing. Further, most of the time, figuring out the right thing to do isn’t all that complicated. Our conscience tells us what is right. So also does God’s word. We don’t have to guess and hope for the best.
Often, we avoid doing the right thing because it is also a difficult thing. It can be an unpopular thing. It can be the less pleasurable thing. All of that is short-term thinking though. Doing right might be difficult, unpopular, and unenjoyable in the immediate, but it is always the best long-term choice.
The benefits of doing the right thing include a clear conscience, pleasing God, and good long-term outcomes.
Do right. You won’t regret it.
