Bread from Heaven
(December series on how the Old Testament points us to Christ)
Scripture Reading: Exodus 16
"Now the house of Israel called its name manna…"
They wandered in the wilderness with rumbling stomachs and grumbling hearts. Hungry and desperate, the Israelites looked at Moses with pointed fingers and weary faces. “Why did you bring us out here? To starve us to death?”
And then God did what God does best—He surprised them.
Each morning, like dew on the grass, it appeared. Small. Round. White. A miracle of provision lying right there on the ground. They blinked in disbelief. “Manna,” they said. Literally, What is it? They couldn’t define it, but it sustained them. Day after day, meal after meal, God sent bread from heaven.
It wasn’t ordinary bread. Manna was enough. Enough to fill their stomachs. Enough to nourish their bodies. Enough to carry them through the wilderness. They didn’t need to hunt for food or barter with neighbors. Manna was all they needed—God’s perfect provision.
But fast forward to the New Testament, and Jesus says something astounding: “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). He points back to that manna in the wilderness and declares, “That was about Me.”
Just like manna, Jesus is all we need. His presence nourishes our weary souls. His love sustains us through life’s deserts. He doesn’t give us half-measures or partial solutions. He gives us Himself—fully, freely, completely.
And isn’t that what we need most? When life feels barren, when our hearts grumble for more, we don’t need Jesus plus wealth. Or Jesus plus success. We just need Jesus. He is our manna—our perfect provision.
So today, let the simplicity of His promise settle into your heart: He is enough. When you wonder how you’ll make it through, remember the bread from heaven. Remember the Savior who came to fill every hungry heart.
Jesus doesn’t just provide what you need. He is what you need.
