Bread from Heaven
Scripture Reading: Exodus 16-17; Matthew 20; Psalm 26
When the people of Israel saw the white, flaky substance covering the ground, they asked, “What is it?” Moses answered, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.” (Exodus 16:15).
This moment in the wilderness was a profound act of God’s provision. Day after day, manna appeared as a tangible reminder that God saw their need and was faithful to sustain them. Yet, as miraculous as manna was, it pointed beyond itself. It was a shadow of a greater provision yet to come: Jesus Christ, the true bread from heaven.
In John 6, Jesus draws a direct connection between the manna in the wilderness and Himself. He says, “Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever” (John 6:49–51).
How is Christ the true manna?
First, manna was a gift from heaven, freely given to the Israelites. They didn’t labor for it or earn it—it was simply there each morning, ready to be received. In the same way, salvation through Christ is a gift of God’s grace. We cannot earn it; we can only receive it by faith.
Second, manna sustained the Israelites physically, keeping them alive in the wilderness. But it was temporary; those who ate it eventually died. Jesus, the true bread from heaven, sustains us spiritually and eternally. Whoever comes to Him in faith will never hunger again because He satisfies the deepest needs of our souls.
Finally, manna required daily dependence. The Israelites couldn’t hoard it or store it up; they had to trust God to provide anew each day. This teaches us something about our relationship with Christ. We need Him daily—not just for initial salvation but for ongoing sustenance, guidance, and grace.
When the Israelites first saw manna, they didn’t understand what it was. They called it “What is it?”—a question that echoes today for those who encounter Jesus. Who is He? Many fail to see Him for who He truly is. But for those who believe, He is the Bread of Life, the One who came to meet our deepest hunger and give us eternal life.
As we reflect on the manna in the wilderness, let it remind us of God’s faithfulness to provide, not just for our physical needs, but for our spiritual hunger as well. Look to Christ, the true bread from heaven, and find in Him the satisfaction, sustenance, and salvation your soul’s eternal life.
