Call on His Name
by Phil Smuland
I’m sharing this devotional which was written by Phil Smuland, a fellow staff member of Equipping Pastors International, with his permission…
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe”
(Proverbs 18:10).
We are living in a time when we need God to know that God is for us, to know He understands, to feel His presence. He understands this. And He comes to us, and reveals Himself to us in many ways.
One of the ways He does this is through His Name. The ancient Hebrews understood this. Often a person’s name indicated their character, their nature, their role in society, or their position in the community. This is also how God’s name was viewed.
There are dozens of names and titles for the Lord in the Bible. Each conveying a truth about who He is. Each one a glimpse into His character. As you understand these names they can be a valuable resource when you call on the Lord. For example, suppose you are sick in some way. When you pray, calling on the name of Yahweh Rapha, you’re calling on the Lord who heals. In this way, you are not only reminding yourself that God heals, but also recognizing that healing is a part of the very nature of God. He is Healer. That is who He is.
Consider a few other names of God, and consider how they can apply to you:
· Feeling anxious? He is Yahweh Shalom, the Lord our peace.
· Struggling with guilt? He is Yahweh Tsidkenu, the Lord our righteousness.
· Feeling lonely? He is Yahweh Shammah, the Lord who is present with us.
· Needing guidance and care? He is Yahweh Rohi, the Lord, my shepherd.
· Feeling like you’re losing the battle? He is Yahweh Nissi, the Lord our Banner of Victory
· Needing help? He is El Shaddai, the All-Powerful God.
· Are you weak? He is El Gibhor, God the Strong One.
· Struggling with temptation? He is Yahweh Mekaddishkem, the Lord who makes us holy.
· Are you needy? He is Yahweh Yireh, the Lord who provides.
· Wondering if God even knows where you are? He is El Rai, the God who sees.
· Recognizing the uncertainty of life? He is El Sali, God my Rock.
Get the point? As you ask for a specific needs, try praying to the One who addresses every circumstance relevant to your situation. He is the sovereign Lord in and over every circumstance in your life
By calling on His various names, you will find great comfort and powerful help in your specific times of need. And in general, as Solomon tells us, you will discover that His name is a strong tower. There you will find a refuge, a place of safety in these uncertain, anxious, and fearful times.
* Yahweh is the Hebrew name for the Lord, often rendered Jehovah in English.

I love knowing the different names of our Lord.
