Cross-Shaped Ethics
Scripture Reading: Romans 15:2-7
I would exhort you to notice how often the New Testament’s ethical commands are tied to the cross. Romans 15:2-3 (Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please himself…”) and Romans 15:7 (“Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you…”) are two examples of this principle. Paul does not simply command us to please our neighbors and welcome one another. He goes further by giving a redemptive reason for these commands. That reason is grounded in the gospel – specifically in Christ’s self-giving sacrifice and its redemptive results.
The cross should shape our ethics. While you are reading through the New Testament, watch for that. Further, while you are living out your life, as you have to confront ethical decisions, ask yourself how the cross and the gospel should shape those decisions.
