Dark Valleys
Scripture Reading: Exodus 9-10; Psalm 23
Andrew Bonar once wrote, “The Church has so exclusively applied this Psalm (Psalm 23) to herself, as almost to forget that her Shepherd…once needed and was glad to use it.

Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved passages of Scripture, offering comfort to countless hearts. Yet, when we view it in the larger context of Scripture, we see that it follows the great Messianic Psalm (Psalm 22), which vividly portrays the sufferings of Christ. In Psalm 22, the Shepherd Himself cries out, feeling forsaken by God, scorned by men, and surrounded by enemies. His whole being—body and soul—endures the agony of the Cross.
This connection is vital: the Shepherd who leads His people through the valley of the shadow of death does so successfully because He Himself has walked that path. Jesus knows what it is to enter the darkest valley. On the Cross, He faced the ultimate darkness—a darkness like that of Egypt during the plagues, a darkness so heavy it could be felt. He endured the darkness of judgment and hell itself, crying out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
But the story doesn’t end there. The Shepherd who entered the darkest valley emerged victorious. After three days in the grave, He rose again—resurrected, glorified, exalted, and ascended. This is the One who walks with us through our valleys.
Because He has already walked this path, we can say with confidence, “I will fear no evil.” The evil we face has already been defeated; it lies trampled under His feet. When the shadows feel overwhelming, we can rest in the assurance that our Shepherd is with us. He is the Light that drives out darkness, the Comforter who never leaves our side.
What valley are you walking through right now? Remember, you do not walk alone. Jesus, your Shepherd, has gone before you, and He walks with you still. Trust Him, for He is faithful to lead you safely through to the other side.

Glory to God.
