Don't be a Slacker
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 18:9
Mr. Strickland, the principal in “Back to the Future,” is most remembered for saying, “You got a real attitude problem, McFly. You’re a slacker.” Generally speaking, a slacker, or a lazy person, is thought of as being neutral as far as the consequences of their inaction. They fail to start or finish their work. They don’t get things done. What should have been built remains unfinished.
Proverbs uses stronger language. Work is constructive and laziness is destructive. When we are diligent, we accomplish things. A report is written, a wall is built, a cow is milked, etc. But when we become slackers, we don’t just leave white space. The page isn’t just left blank. We rip it down the middle.
How so? Laziness destroys potential prosperity. It destroys productive contribution to society. It also ruins a person’s sense of self-respect gained from work. If a business employs slackers, it imperials their reputation, productivity, and future business prospects.
The diligent person is constructive. The slacker is destructive.
