Don't Be Troubled
Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 18-19; John 14; Psalm 134
“Let not your hearts be troubled.”
(John 14:1, 27)
Jesus says it twice in John 14: “Let not your hearts be troubled.” He doesn’t say it lightly, and He doesn’t say it without reason. The disciples were troubled—anxious, confused, and overwhelmed. Peace was slipping away, and fear was creeping in.
It’s understandable. Jesus had just told them that He was going away. He was preparing them for His arrest and crucifixion—events that, from their perspective, looked like the worst possible outcome. Their world was about to be upended.
Yes, the disciples believed in life after death. But they hadn’t yet grasped that Jesus’ death wasn’t a tragic detour—it was the very center of God’s plan. They didn’t see that His cross was the doorway to eternal life. That understanding would come later. But in that moment, fear filled the space that peace had left behind.
Still, Jesus didn’t tell them, “You’ll understand later, just get through it.” He cared too much for them to leave them in anxiety. He wanted them to experience peace as they walked through the storm, not just once it was over.
Jesus wants the same for us.
I believe a simple truth: Everything is going to be alright.
Not because life will always be easy—but because God wins. His people share in His victory. There is forgiveness, resurrection, eternal life, and a kingdom that cannot be shaken. One day, every tear will be wiped away. There will be no more sorrow, sin, or death. Yes—everything is going to be okay.
But here’s the tension: knowing that truth doesn’t always quiet the fears of today. We still face stress, grief, and uncertainty. That’s exactly what Jesus addresses in John 14.
So how do we keep our hearts from being troubled?
Faith and prayer.
Jesus says, “Believe in God; believe also in me.” (John 14:1)
Believe that His death secured your place in the Father’s house. Believe that He hears your prayers. Believe that He has not abandoned you but has given His Spirit to be with you. Believe that His peace is real and available—not just someday, but now.
Then pray. Pray like Jesus is near—because He is. Talk to Him honestly, and let His promises settle your heart.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you… Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
(John 14:27)
