Don't Give Up
on people
Scripture Reading: Genesis 14:1-16
When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men… (v.14)
Recently I ran into Stan, an old friend from high school. I asked him about his younger brother Charlie, whom I hadn’t seen in 30 years. Stan shrugged and said he hadn’t talked to him in a long time. Apparently, Charlie’s life had not been well lived. Stan’s quick rundown of Charlie’s escapades painted a bleak picture.
Stan said that his family had all given up on Charlie. Well, everyone except their dad. Dad was still holding out hope that Charlie’s life would turn around and he was doing what he could to make that happen.
Abram had every reason to let Lot suffer the consequences of his decisions. Who would have faulted him if he just gave up on his nephew? He didn’t. Abram marshaled his resources and rescued Lot.
How many people in your world have been given up on? Do they need an Abram also? Do they need someone who will risk trying to rescue them from that which has taken them captive? There are no guarantees of success if we try, but we are assured of failure if we don’t.
Merciful Lord, I will risk the ministry of rescue and ask your mercy be revealed through me. Amen.
