Don't Look Back Now

Let them not turn back in folly…

When things are going well, when God is blessing us, there we are prone to turn away from the Lord and to turn back toward sin. The Psalmist has prayed for God to restore and revive His people. But what if God answers? Will His people remain steadfast in their renewed commitment to Him?

The Psalmist is recognizing our tendency to fall back into our old ways once the pressure of trouble has eased. I remember a young lady who had made some serious relationship mistakes and had just extracted herself from one told me “From now on I won’t buy a can of soup without asking the Lord about it first.” It was an honest and sincere commitment that was born out of great trouble she had experienced. Unfortunately, within a year she had fallen back into her old patterns of decision-making about relationships.

We are most vulnerable when we are most at peace. Beware.
