Don't Worry
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:25-34
Presbyterian pastor Henry Ward Beecher once said, “Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it with the handle of anxiety or the handle of faith.” I find it interesting that in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus spends a great deal of time on the subject of anxiety. Now, you can’t classify the importance of something merely by its length. If that were the case “The Gettysburg Address would have been forgotten long ago and we would still be talking about that two-hour speech by that other guy that spoke after Lincoln.
Nevertheless, it does say something about the problem of anxiety that Jesus dealt with it in such detail here.
Jesus points out the main sources of our worry. We worry about daily necessities. We wonder if we will have what we need to survive.
Ultimately, the antidote for worry is faith. Will we trust our Father in heaven to take care of us? That is the question. When we do, we fight against worry and we can focus on things that matter much more than what we will wear or eat. Faith in God’s provision for us lets us seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
Don’t be anxious. Trust God.

Thank you, much needed reminder for me!
