Even to You!
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 22:19
That your trust may be in the Lord, I have made them known to you today, even to you.
This proverb ends in a way that could come across as snarky if read aloud with the right kind of inflection. “Even to you.” What does he mean by that? It is not a word of criticism. It is a word of encouragement. The word goes out in a general sense to everyone. The proclamation is made both through general revelation [The heavens declare the glory of God], and special revelation [The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul]. Everyone whose eyes and ears are opened may see and hear.
While the word is general in its form, that is, it goes out to “whosoever will;” it is personal in its effect. It is addressed to each individual soul. As Albert Barnes commented, “The wide general character of the teaching does not hinder its being a personal message to everyone who reads it.”
“Even to you!”
