Expectations Exceeded
Scripture Reading: Genesis 48-49; Matthew 14; Psalm 19
Jacob’s life was marked by trials. Some, like his conflict with Esau, were the result of his own choices. Others, like the loss of Joseph, were the painful consequences of others’ actions.
In Genesis 48:11, Jacob reflects on one of these trials. After being told Joseph was dead—tragically mauled by a wild animal—he carried the burden of that loss for years, believing he would never see his son again. He had resigned himself to this grief.
But God had something greater in store. Not only did Jacob see Joseph again, but he also saw Joseph’s sons. In awe and gratitude, Jacob proclaimed, “God has let me see your offspring also.” (Genesis 48:11) What Jacob thought was impossible became a reality. God had exceeded his expectations.
The same God who exceeded Jacob’s hopes is at work in our lives. As Paul writes in Ephesians 3:20, He is able to do “exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think.”
Perhaps you’re waiting, like Jacob, and your hopes feel dashed. Maybe God’s plan doesn’t look anything like what you imagined. But trust this: God’s faithfulness and power surpass our greatest expectations. In His perfect timing, He works in ways that leave us in awe, reminding us of His love and sovereignty.

Great message, Steve, thank you!
Good word.
