Failing Foundations
Scripture Reading: 2 Chronicles 6; Acts 12; Psalm 11
If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?
— Psalm 11:3
David is not expressing hopelessness here. He is not saying, “The moral and spiritual foundations of society have crumbled, so there’s nothing left for the righteous to do.” If anything, this is the voice of fear — either from individuals around him, or simply the spirit of despair that whispers, “It’s all falling apart. Run for your life.”
Whether it came from one person, a group of advisers, or the general mood of the moment, the message to David was clear: “The foundations are destroyed. Evil is advancing. Your only hope is to flee.”
But David refuses to surrender to fear. He answers this attitude in verse one: “In the LORD I take refuge.” He goes on to remind them — and himself — that God is still on His throne. He reigns. He sees. He judges. No amount of chaos on earth has shaken heaven.
David’s words speak to us, too. We all face moments when the world feels unstable — when society’s moral foundations seem to crack, when personal crises hit, when fear says, “There’s nothing left to do but run.”
But for the righteous, there is always something to do: trust in the Lord.
Look up. Remember, Jesus is Lord. His throne is unshaken. His purposes stand. Our task is not to run in fear, but to stand in faith.
When others say all hope is lost, say with David, “In the LORD I take refuge.”
