Fear and Faith
Scripture Reading: Psalm 73; Proverbs 26-29; 2 Corinthians 5
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe. - Proverbs 29:25
So many Proverbs teach wisdom by contrast—two ways of living, set side by side, with two very different outcomes. Here, the outcome is either being trapped like an animal in a snare or being safe under God’s care.
The consequences are clear. But at first, the contrast between “fear of man” and “trust in the Lord” may feel less obvious. We might expect the writer to say, “Trusting in man lays a snare, but trusting in the Lord is safe,” or even, “Fearing man lays a snare, but fearing the Lord is safe.” That seems cleaner.
But Solomon writes it this way for a reason. He’s showing us that fear and faith are really two sides of the same coin. When we fear man, we’re placing faith in them—believing they have ultimate power over our lives. It’s a kind of faith, but misplaced and destructive.
On the other hand, trusting in the Lord is tied to a proper fear of Him. We trust Him because He truly has power over our lives—but unlike man, He uses His power for our good. We rely on Him because we know He sees, He cares, and He is working all things together for His purpose.
So the contrast is sharp after all:
Fear man—misplaced faith that they will harm us, and we end up trapped.
Trust God—rightly placed faith that He will do good to us, and we are safe.
