Follow Me
The bottom line of discipleship
As I have noted in previous devotionals on this text, this whole experience is connected to Peter’s initial calling. It was there that Peter heard Jesus say, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then, they left their nets and followed Him.
It was important for Peter and the other disciples to see that, in one sense, nothing had changed. They were to be followers of Christ. Of course, it was going to be dramatically different in many ways. Jesus would be no longer physically present with them. He had been preparing them for this new reality, though they hadn’t fully grasped what He had been telling them. The Holy Spirit would come and indwell them. They would still be following Him, but in the way, they had up to this point.
They wouldn’t be walking around behind Jesus, sitting down at a table, enjoying a meal with Him, or talking to him under a fig tree again. It would be different for them. But in the most important sense, nothing had changed.
The bottom line was, “follow me,” (Verses 19 and 22)
It still is.
