Giving from the Heart
Scripture Reading: Exodus 35-36; Psalm 34
The construction of the Tabernacle was a monumental task, but what stands out in Exodus 35–36 is not just the work itself—it is the heart behind the giving. The Israelites were not coerced into bringing their gifts; they gave freely, willingly, and joyfully. Their hearts were stirred, and they responded to the call with generosity.
This passage reveals an important truth about giving: it is not just about the gift but the spirit in which it is given. God is not after reluctant offerings but hearts that overflow with love and gratitude. When we give—whether our time, talents, or resources—it should be an act of worship, an expression of devotion to the Lord.
A remarkable moment occurs in Exodus 36:5 when the artisans tell Moses, "The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the Lord commanded to be done." Imagine that! The people were so moved that they gave beyond what was needed, and Moses had to tell them to stop. What a testimony to the power of generosity when it flows from a willing heart.
As we serve God today, let us examine our own hearts. Are we giving out of duty, or are we moved by love for God and His work? May we, like the Israelites, be stirred in spirit to give generously, knowing that our gifts—no matter how big or small—are part of something far greater than ourselves.
I believe this is a work of the Holy Spirit. We can pray for a generous heart, but we can’t manufacture it.
Heavenly Father, stir our hearts to give as an act of worship. May we not hold back but offer freely and joyfully, knowing that all we have comes from You. Help us to see that our generosity is part of Your greater work. In Jesus' name, Amen.
