Good Leaders

and bad followers

Scripture Reading: 2 Chronicles 27

A guy I know always used to say, “Leadership is everything.” I think he was using hyperbole to make his point. Maybe not. Maybe he believed that. What he said has some validity. Leadership is important. Good leadership is vital. I would just want to caution that leadership, as important as it is, isn’t everything. Followership matters too.

Some would argue that bad followers are the fruit of bad leadership. Again, that is often true, but it is not always true. The reign of Jotham is a case in point. The inspired word says, “he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD according to all his father Uzziah had done…but the people still followed corrupt practices,” (2 Chronicles 27:2).

Pray for those in places of leadership. It’s not always a bed of roses. And when you see a good leader, one who is doing what is right, pray that those they lead will have the good sense to follow.
