Good News!
and why you need to hear it
You have probably heard the word “Gospel,” and you might even know that it means “good news.” But what exactly is that good news? What is the gospel? Here it is in one sentence:
The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, and rose again from the dead so that now there is no condemnation for those who believe in him.
That’s it.
Why is that good news for you? Because as you probably realize, you fall far short of God’s standard of righteousness. So do I. So does everyone who has ever lived, except Jesus Christ. And there is nothing we can do to bridge the gap between who we are and what we ought to be. No matter how hard we try, we always fall short. Okay, that sounds like I’m giving you bad news now. It is. But that bad news is what makes the gospel such great good news.
Jesus has done for us what we can’t do for ourselves. His perfect life, substitutionary death, and triumphant resurrection has bridged the gap, made reconciliation with God possible, and given us the promise of eternal life. Paul states it clearly in Romans 6:23…
The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We receive this gift of eternal life by faith, by trusting in Jesus Christ and what he has done for us, not in what we might do for him. The first way we respond in faith is to call upon the Lord. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13)
So, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Call upon his name. Ask him to save you. He will.
And that is good news!
