Good Night
Scripture Reading: Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
I heard a comedian talking about how his body will tell him he needs to go to bed. So, he goes and when he is just about to doze off, his mind says, “No you don’t…” and starts rattling off a list of things to be worried about; things he can do nothing about.
This is why David says that BOTH lies down AND sleeps. We have all probably experienced those lying down but not sleeping nights.
What was David’s secret to a good night’s rest?
Faith.
I don’t want to oversimplify the matter because I realize that some people may have physical issues that disrupt their sleep. I’m not speaking to that situation. I’m talking about the worries and cares of life that flood our hearts to the point that we can’t shut off and rest.
That is the issue David was dealing with in his own life, and the remedy he found was realizing that the Lord is ultimately the only One who can deal with the things we worry about. Therefore, we need to trust in Him.
Practically speaking, what can we do when we are overwhelmed, troubled, and restless?
· Remind yourself of the promises of God. (2 Corinthians 1:20 “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”)
· Reflect on God’s blessings in your life and give thanks. (1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”)
· Redirect your thinking toward better things. (Philippians 4:8-9 “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things…and the God of peace will be with you.”)
· Return your worries to the God who cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.”)
Doing these things will turn your eyes toward Christ and build up your faith in Him.
Good Night.
