He Reigns
Scripture Reading: Psalm 123
To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he has mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.
When the Psalmist says that he is lifting up his eyes, he is not speaking geographically. He is speaking theologically. He is saying that God is above Him in the order of things. God is above all things. He is “enthroned in the heavens.”
The problem he is struggling with is this feeling of being fed up. He is fed up with the proud who are at ease. We can assume they are at ease because they are doing well in life. They have money, power, and health. And they don’t believe. They don’t fear the Lord. Their good fortune, combined with their unbelief, causes them to think that believers are foolish and deserving of contempt and scorn. They not only think that, but they say it. In a way, it appears that they are the ones running the world.
The Psalmist looks up and remembers the Lord is reigning and ruling from the heavens.
He overcomes being overcome by the world by reminding himself Who God is.
Today, remember that Jesus not only died, He not only was raised from the grave, but He also ascended into the heavens and sat down at the right hand of God until His enemies become His footstool.
Overcome being overcome by looking up and remembering who reigns.
