Here Am I
The English translation of Isaiah’s response to hearing the Lord’s voice is a good one. It is “Here am I,” and not “Here I am.” It’s a slight difference between the two, but an important one. Isaiah wasn’t informing the Lord as to his location. God knows where we are. He wasn’t jumping up and down, waving his hand, and shouting, “Pick me!” “Pick me!”
Instead, this was Isaiah bowing down and humbly volunteering for whatever the Lord was asking of him. Notice that the only thing he heard the Voice say was, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Go where? Isaiah didn’t know yet. Sent for what purpose? He didn’t know that either. The details were unimportant. The Lord needed someone to go, and Isaiah was willing to be the one.
The Lord laid out the contract. It was a blank page. Isaiah would sign at the bottom and let the Lord fill in the rest after the fact. He didn’t need to read the fine print. He didn’t need to see everything laid out in black and white. That would come in time. At that moment all he needed was to be a vessel the Lord would use.
