Here and There
Scripture Reading: Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path…
This verse was one of the first I memorized. The best I can remember, it was a memory verse we were teaching children in a children’s church class. I always assumed that both lines were synonymous. They were repeating the same idea in different ways. I have come to see it differently. While the two lines are similar, they are not synonymous.
“A lamp unto my feet,” speaks to the present moment. It is about where we are at right now. That is where our feet are planted. They are where we are. “A light unto my path,” speaks to where we are going. A path is the way we are or should be walking.
The word of God helps us with both. It reveals and helps us understand where we are in life. It illuminates our present position. That is important. If we can’t see where we are, we won’t make progress toward where we need to be.
The Scriptures also illuminate our path. They help us know and understand the way we should be walking. They give us direction for the future.
May what the Psalmist said of the word be true for you as well. May God’s word be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.

Great insight, thank you! Have never seen this interpretation!
