Scripture Reading: Zechariah 11-14; Revelation 21
I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and please for mercy, so that, when they look upon me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him…
And if one asks him, “What are these wounds on your back?” He will say, “The wounds I received in the house of my friends…”
Zechariah 12:10, 13:6
These cryptic lines tucked away into the book of Zechariah find their fulfillment in the crucifixion of Christ. This is the way the Apostles interpreted the Old Testament.
John quotes Zechariah 12:10 in John 19:37 -
And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
While 13:6 is not directly quoted in the New Testament, 13:7 is by Jesus Himself in Matthew 26:31 and so it finds itself in the orbit of Old Testament Messianic prophecy. Based on the way the Apostles handle these texts in the New Testament, it is not unreasonable to see this as a prophecy about Christ.
The main point here is that there are bread crumbs dropped throughout the Old Testament leading us to Christ, the cross, and the gospel. Familiarity with the New Testament brings clarity and light to the Old. While we can’t say with certainty that 13:6 is a prophecy about Christ (there are other legitimate ways to see it) we should always have our eyes open to seeing Him and our ears tuned to gospel notes as we read the Old Testament.
As Jesus said, all these things were written about Him.
