Honest Questions
Scripture Reading: John 14:1-7
You have probably heard it said, “There are no dumb questions.” I don’t know if that is true. I don’t think it is, but the point behind that statement is valid. A sincere question, even when the answer might be obvious to someone else, is worth asking.
Sure, sometimes questions are asked for reasons other than a desire to know the truth. There were instances where Jesus was asked questions by people who were trying to trick Him into saying something they could use against him. That happens all the time. Just watch a press conference. People ask leading questions, trying to get the respondent to answer according to their presuppositions.
But there are good, honest, sincere questions too; questions in which the person asking is seeking the truth. Thomas asked questions like that. Thank God he did. John 14:6 is one of the most beloved and quoted verses from the Bible and it comes to us as a reply to Thomas’ sincere question.
So, ask away. God is not afraid of your questions. James said, “We have not because we ask not,” and while the context is referring to material things, a broader application could be to answers to our questions. We don’t get answers to questions we don’t ask. Thomas asked and Jesus answered.
