If
Scripture Reading: Psalm 7:12
"If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow..."
Psalm 7:12-16 paints a sobering image: God as an archer, bow drawn, arrow poised—deadly and aimed with perfect precision. His "fiery shafts" (v.13) ensure no escape for the unrepentant. The psalmist underscores that this judgment is entirely just because "God is a righteous judge" (v.11). Any delay in judgment is due to undeserved mercy and God’s patient grace, awaiting repentance on the sinner’s part.
Yet, there is hope in that single, crucial word: “If.” This small word makes all the difference. God's justice, though assured, is tempered with mercy: “If a man does not repent” implies a path to life. When we turn to Him, His drawn bow is lowered; the sword, sheathed.
As Scripture reminds us, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God,” but also, “Today is the day of salvation.” Both statements are true. Our fate turns on what we do about that simple word, “if.”
