In that Day
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 19:16-24
Isaiah, among all of the Old Testament prophets, expressly spoke about the gospel to the Gentiles. He does so here in clear language. He moves seamlessly from God’s judgment on the nations, as seen in the first part of chapter 19, to God’s conversion of the nations.
Isaiah repeats the phrase, “in that day,” several times in this passage. It means a period of time, not just one 24-hour day. In this case, Isaiah is giving a prophecy of a future time, a time not yet fully realized, when the nations would be converted to Christ.
One of the worst, most demonically inspired songs in modern history is John Lennon’s “Imagine.” One of the lines in the song says, “and the world will be as one.” Of course, in his song, he imagines a world without possessions, religion, no heaven, no hell, nothing worth dying for, etc. He imagines this would be the utopian answer that leads to a united world or peace. It doesn’t. It won’t. It can’t. Please stop singing it.
The world (in Isaiah it is foreshadowed by Egypt, Assyria, and Israel becoming one) will be united in peace when it comes under the Lordship of the Prince of Peace. It will happen…in that day.

Made me think of... “But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.”
