Jesus Interceding
Scripture Reading: Psalm 118; Jeremiah 50; Hebrews 7
Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
- Hebrews 7:25
We should not imagine this verse to mean that the Father is angry with us and that the Son must continually convince Him to be merciful. The whole Trinity is united in the work of our salvation. A helpful way some have summarized it is: the Father planned salvation, the Son accomplished it, and the Spirit applies it. Though simplified, that statement is directionally true. God is not divided against Himself in saving us. The Father, Son, and Spirit are of one mind and one love in redeeming His people.
When we read this verse in the context of Hebrews, we see that Christ’s intercession is not merely His words—it is His very presence. The One who was crucified, risen, and ascended now stands in heaven as our High Priest. His life there is our assurance here. Christ’s presence before the Father is the guarantee that all who belong to Him will be saved “to the uttermost.”
Not long ago, an elderly woman asked me a question about heaven. She began by saying, “When I get to heaven—” and then stopped herself to say, “Well… I hope I’ll be there.” And this was not someone without faith. She believes the gospel. But like many of us, she wrestles with assurance.
The Christian need not live in that kind of uncertainty. Why? Because our confidence is not in the strength of our faith, our consistency, or our obedience—it is in Christ Himself. He is there. And because He is there, interceding by His very life, our salvation is secure.
So what is our hope of eternal life?
It is Jesus Christ—crucified for us, risen for us, and now living forevermore for us.
