Jesus is Lord
Scripture Reading: Psalm 91; Isaiah 43-45; Ephesians 6
Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that will not return: “To me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall swear allegiance.” - Isaiah 45:22-23 -
It is amazing that people still call into question as to whether or not the New Testament makes any claim for the divinity of Jesus.
If you are acquainted with the New Testament, you might find this verse from Isaiah sounds familiar. You would be right to think that. It is quoted by Paul in his great Christological passage in Philippians chapter two:
Therefore, God has highly exalted him and given him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee would bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. -Philippians 2:9-11 -
In comparing these two passages, Isaiah clearly is speaking about God. Paul is writing about Jesus. And the same thing is said in both texts. Paul was not ignorant about what he was claiming in writing this way. He was emphatically stating that Jesus is God.
Further, the point that is made in both texts is that Jesus is the God before whom the whole world will bow. He is the one who everyone will worship.
As a matter of fact, the point of the Isaiah text is that belonging to the people of God is no longer about a national identity. It is, instead, about a faith commitment to Christ. Those who belong are recognized by their willingness to worship Jesus and confess him as Lord
