Jesus: Our Holy King
Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he! (verse 5)
Psalm 99 reminds us that God is holy. He reigns at the Sovereign King. He is seated high above the heavens, and yet he is also intimately present among his people. His rule is marked by perfect justice and righteousness and unending faithfulness. In every generation, God has revealed his holiness and love, dealing with sin and still answering his people when they call on him, forgiving their sins.
As Christians, we see the fulness of this Psalm in Jesus Christ. He is the King who rules over all of creation, and the High Priest who intercedes for us, and the Savior who bore our sins. Through Jesus we are invited to approach God’s throne with confidence, worshipping at his footstool in awe and reverence.
God’s holiness humbles us. It stirs in us desires for his grace. This Psalm gives us hope. The holy God who demands justice is the same God who provides forgiveness. In Jesus Christ, mercy and justice meet, righteousness and peace kiss. In Him we find salvation and a reason to worship. In Him we find ourselves fleeing to, not from, this Holy God.
