Jesus Overcame Temptation
Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 20-21; Luke 4: Psalm 74
Two great temptations shape the story of humanity. The first took place in a garden of abundance; the second in a wilderness of desolation. The first led to death; the second opened the way to life.
In the garden, Adam and Eve were surrounded by every provision they could ever need. Yet, when Satan questioned God’s word—"Did God actually say…?"—they doubted and disobeyed. They grasped at what was forbidden, believing it would make them like God. Their failure brought sin and death into the world, leaving all of us under the weight of their rebellion.
In the wilderness, Jesus faced the same enemy, but under far harsher conditions. He was hungry, weak, and alone. Yet when Satan tempted Him—twisting God’s word, offering power without suffering, questioning His identity—Jesus stood firm. He did what Adam did not: He trusted the Father completely and obeyed perfectly.
Adam’s failure became our failure, but Jesus’ victory became our victory. As Paul wrote, “For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19).
The temptations of Adam and Jesus show us two ways to live: trusting in ourselves or trusting in God. Adam’s fall left us broken, but Jesus' triumph brings us redemption. Because Jesus, the Second Adam, overcame and was victorious where the first Adam sinned and fell, through faith in Him we can have His victory with Him!
