Jesus, the Stone
Scripture Reading: Matthew 21:42-44
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
This was the Lord’s doing,
And it is marvelous in our eyes?
“Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”
In Matthew 21, the narrative is quickly moving toward the crucifixion, the moment that Pilate, the High Priest, the Jewish Council, and the Roman soldiers would fall on the Stone, Jesus. The builders were in the process of rejecting the cornerstone. To almost everyone watching this unfold, it appeared as though they had won and Jesus had lost. After all, they crucified and buried Him. Everything He had done seemed for naught, and all the things He promised seemed to have been lost.
While everyone else was thinking this way, Jesus had a different perspective. Those who fell on Him, the Stone, would be broken. The rejected Stone would become the chief Cornerstone.
When we look at the world around us, we see the trajectory of evil and wickedness, we might feel at times as though all is lost, the devil is winning. We think he is falling on God’s people and overcoming them. Fear not.
Jesus is still the Stone, the Chief Cornerstone. All who fall on Him will be broken. Satan may do some heel bruising, but his head is being crushed.
