Joshua and Jesus
a December series on how the Old Testament points us to Christ
Scripture Reading: Joshua
Today, we’re stepping back to view the entire book of Joshua, where the narrative offers a stunning glimpse of Jesus. Not just in a single verse, but through the life and mission of Joshua himself, we see a powerful foreshadowing of the Savior.
Let’s start with their names. Joshua in Hebrew is essentially the same as Jesus in Greek—both meaning “Jehovah saves.” It’s not just a linguistic coincidence; it’s a profound theological link. Joshua’s name, like Jesus’, declares the truth that salvation is from the Lord.
Joshua is best remembered as the leader who brought God’s people into the Promised Land. This is more than ancient history—it’s a divine parable. The Promised Land has long been understood as a picture of the eternal kingdom of God. When Israel crossed the Jordan River, it symbolized death and resurrection: leaving the wilderness of sin behind and stepping into new life on the other side.
But here’s the key—Joshua, not Moses, led them across. Moses, the great Lawgiver, could only bring the people to the brink of the Promised Land. The Law, as good and holy as it is, cannot save us. Paul reminds us in Romans that the Law shows us our need for grace, but it cannot deliver us into eternal life.
That’s where Joshua steps in. In his role, we see an echo of Christ. Joshua accomplished what Moses could not—he led the people into the inheritance God had promised. In the same way, Jesus does what the Law cannot: He brings us home. Through His death and resurrection, He leads us across the “Jordan” of death and into the eternal Promised Land.
This truth is not abstract; it’s deeply personal. As believers, we have a Savior who doesn’t just point the way but is the Way. Jesus, our greater Joshua, ensures that we will not falter in the wilderness of sin or stop short at the edge of the kingdom. He is the One who completes the journey for us.
So today, as we reflect on Joshua’s story, let us rejoice in Jesus, our perfect Joshua. He is our salvation, our leader, and the One who carries us into eternal life.

Loving this series my friend. Thank you for your work.
