Keep Your Eye On the Ball
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 3:21
My son, do not lose sight of these – keep sound wisdom and discretion…
The phrase “taking your eye off the ball” is borrowed from the sporting world but has many applications in everyday life. In football, a receiver may make the mistake of subtly shifting his focus from the ball he thinks he is going to catch to where he is going to run after he makes the catch. When that happens, he usually doesn’t catch the ball. A great batter will see the ball when it comes off the pitcher’s hand all the way through contact with the bat. You have to keep your eye on the ball to be successful in most sports.
Translating that into everyday life would mean staying focused on the important things and not being distracted by things that will cause you to “drop the ball.” Solomon doesn’t use that sporting analogy here, but it seems to fit. Keep your eye on wisdom and discretion. Don’t lose sight of them. These are your friends and you don’t want to lose track of them.
