Life is Direction
30 Days in Proverbs - day five
Wisdom comes into the heart to deliver us from dangerous paths. Proverbs speaks first of an evil man whose words cannot be trusted and then of an adulterous woman whose smooth speech leads to death. Though the images shift, the theme is the same: life is about direction.
Both figures invite us onto a path. The evil man forsakes uprightness and walks in darkness. His ways are crooked and deceptive. The seductive woman also has a path—one that appears inviting but leads straight to death. Those who enter it do not return.
Every step we take sets a direction. Small choices are never as small as they seem. A single step turns the feet, and once turned, the next step comes more easily. This is how lives unravel. Addictions, scandals, and collapses do not begin at the end; they begin with a thought, a look, a small indulgence.
Jesus taught the same truth when He spoke of the narrow way that leads to life and the broad road that leads to destruction. The narrow way is not miserable; it is intentional. It is chosen. The road to destruction is wide, easy to enter, and often pleasant—until it is too late to turn back.
The tempters in Proverbs are not honest guides. The man speaks nothing trustworthy. The woman uses smooth words. Neither reveals the cost of the road they offer. They are not offering a single decision but inviting us onto a way of life.
Wisdom protects us by helping us see where paths lead. It teaches us to play the long game, to look beyond momentary pleasure, and to recognize that sin’s promises never satisfy. Wisdom also guards us from gullibility. It gives discernment—the ability to sense when something is off, even if we cannot yet explain why.
This passage ends where all paths end: in a destination. The upright dwell in the land. The wicked are cut off. We walk a road, and we arrive somewhere.
Life is about direction.
Direction determines destination.
Let Wisdom lead you onto a good path, so that you may dwell in a good land and not be cut off from it.
