Light in the Light

Scripture Reading: Psalm 36:9

In your light do we see light…

This is admittedly an odd saying. It is more difficult to understand than the first half of the verse which says, “With you is the fountain of life.” That’s clear. Jesus said this about Himself in John’s Gospel. We go to the fountain (Jesus) and freely drink and receive life from Him. But what does it mean to see light in the light? We normally think of seeing light in the darkness.

This riddle is meant to convey the idea that everything else is understood in the light of Christ. You never fully understand anything apart from Him. You must come to the light to see the light. You can’t rightly understand and discern yourself, the world around you, other people, relationships, etc. without first coming to Christ. When we come to Christ, the Light of the world, we begin to see things by His light.
