Love Wins
Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 11
I recently watched a portion of a contentious school board meeting. The attendees were split over the educators' decision to promote material that encouraged transgenderism. Some were holding up signs that read “love wins.” That seems to be a common refrain from those on that side of the issue. It’s smart marketing. Who can argue with love, after all, Jesus himself said that loving God and our neighbor was the summation of the whole law and the most important thing we can do.
The problem is when you get down to trying to understand what the loving thing to do is in each situation. That is why the Scriptures have hundreds of commands. Those other commands and exhortations aren’t separate from or distinct from the Great Commandment or its little sister. All of the commands of God are applications of those two commandments. Therefore, love looks like obedience to the word of God. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” I
Paul was hard on the Corinthian church. He called them out for their sins. Why? Because he didn’t love them? No. Because he did. (See 11:11). It is not loving to allow people to destroy themselves or others through wickedness. Paul did the hard thing because he loved God and he loved the Corinthians.
We could learn something from Paul.
